Paul Dorrell, author of "Living the Artist's Life," will speak and sign copies of his book at 2 p.m. Saturday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Oak View Mall.

Dorrell, a Kansas City, Mo. art dealer and novelist, discusses what it's like to be an artist, and he details his own successes and failures in the world of art and literature. Dorrell's accessible, chatty tone makes the book a fun, instructive read, and his observations and frustrations are at times very funny. One throwaway scene describes a woman who enters the Kansas City gallery that Dorrell owns, looks at all the paintings and sculptures, and asks if Dorrell did them all.

"You bet, ma'am," Dorrell relates his response. "I painted every painting in here. Did the sculptures too, but only in my spare time."
